The Sharon Public Library is looking for an upbeat, cheerful, and flexible person to fill the position of Library Assistant. This is a full time, 37.5 hours per week position including Wednesday evenings and every other
Saturday. The job offers full benefits.

The Library Assistant will staff both the Adult and Children's Circulation Desks. Duties include: checking materials in and out; assisting patrons in the use of the library facilities; answering and directing telephone calls; assisting patrons in registering for library cards; assisting patrons with issues they may have with their library account; processing overdue notices; collecting fines; other tasks of a similar nature as necessary.

In addition, Library Assistants are encouraged to contribute any talents, skills, or interests they may have
in fulfilling the library's mission.

Qualifications:

Associate's degree or a combination of coursework and experience equivalent to a two year degree, a bachelor's degree being preferred; experience working with the general
public in a customer service oriented setting. Prior library experience is desirable. Basic computer skills.
Ability to work as part of a team.

Salary:

$17.36 to $20.75 in ten steps

Children's Librarian, Abington Public Library

The Abington Public Library seeks a Children's Librarian who enjoys the challenge and excitement of working with children from babyhood through adolescence. The Children's Librarian must be equally comfortable working with parents and caregivers. Historically the citizens of Abington and the Board of Library Trustees have made children's library services a priority.

Areas of responsibility: Supervising the Children's Room and the Nero Young Adult Room, maintaining a welcoming and inviting atmosphere. Selecting and cataloging children's and young adult print, non-print and electronic materials using professionally recognized reviewing media. Providing reference services for children and parents. Planning and presenting programs for youth from birth to 14. Planning and presenting library instruction for public school class visits. With the Library Director administering the children's budget for materials and programming. Providing circulation and adult reference services as required.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree including course work in library science, children's literature and information technology. Enrollment in an ALA accredited MLS degree program or an M.Ed. degree program for school media is desirable. Experience working with children in either a public library or an elementary school situation. Ability to work comfortably in a Windows environment. Knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, desktop publishing and e-mail. Experience with library circulation/cataloging applications, particularly Sirsi/Dynix Workflows. Willingness to stay current with technology used by adolescents and children.

Hours and Benefits: This is a full time (35 hours per week) position under the Abington Library Staff Association bargaining agreement. Typical schedule includes one evening per week and rotating Saturdays. Salary range $17.77 - $22.61 per hour in four steps.

Young Adult/Reference Librarian, Part-time, Temporary, Thayer Public Library, Braintree

Description: The Thayer Public Library is searching for a librarian with expertise in young adult services. This is a new, temporary position, funded through June 2009. We are looking for a creative person who truly enjoys middle and high school aged children and can attract them to our library through expanded collections, programs and services. The right candidate will be familiar and comfortable with ever-changing technologies and media of intereset to teens.

Duties: Provides a dynamic and caring presence in the Young Adult Department for preteen and teen patrons; responsible for YA collection development; develops, promotes, and implements new programs to attract teens to the library such as book discussion groups and a Teen Advisory group; assists with the implementation of our LSTA Teens & Tweens grant; provides reference coverage when needed; particpates in library management team and technology team; other duties as assigned by the Director.

Qualifications: MLS degree plus one (1) year of relevant professional experience preferably in a public library required, though we are willing to consider an MLS candidate who has completed most coursework. Knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, e-mail, social networking software, comfort and familiarity with computer hardware and software applications required; library circulation/cataloging network applications preferred.

Salary: $22.80 per hour to start; 19.5 hours per week; schedule to be determined will include some nights, afternoons, and Saturday afternoons.

Library Assistant III, Bristol Community College, Fall River

Position: Library Assistant III

Statement of Duties: Perform copy cataloging functions for all formats of materials utilizing OCLC in conjunction with the cataloging component of WorkFlows from the SirsiDynix Company. Included in these materials are resources for the LRC ( Learning Resource Center,) CTL (Center for Teaching and Learning,) and the New Bedford and Attleboro Campuses. Responsible for the physical processing of materials and the notification of faculty and staff when material is ready for use/checkout.  Responsible for inventory of library processing supplies and mending damaged print resources. Participate in circulation desk activities; work with library staff to create a customer service oriented library environment. Participate in special projects and other library-related activities as required.

Supervision Received: Reports to the Assistant Dean (Learning Resource Center.)

Duties:

•  Facilitates access to informational resources in the Learning Resource Center. Performs copy cataloging of items for descriptive and authoritative access within the on-line catalog. Accesses records from the OCLC (Online Computer Library Center) database and updates records to the SAILS database.

•  Processing informational resources for the LRC, CTL (Center for Teaching & Learning,) New Bedford Campus and Attleboro Campus.

•  Notifies faculty and staff when requested materials are available for circulation.

•  Responsible for importing and linking new bibliographic records from OCLC into the SAILS database through the cataloging utility of WorkFlows.

•  Physical processing of materials including security plates, barcodes, date due slips, spine and pocket labels, stamping, and other required labels for non-print media.

•  Deletes holdings and/or records from OCLC and SAILS online catalog through WorkFlows for lost, stolen, or discarded items.

•  Maintains statistics of items added and discarded from the collection and is responsible for preparing annual reports for the same.

•  Attends and participates in meetings, seminars, and training sessions. Works with staff members on various plans, procedures and problems in the cataloging sub-group.

•  Participates in the development of library policies, goal setting and assessment efforts.

•  Coordinates and performs semiannual inventory of LRC processing supplies and requests any needed supplies.

•  Participates in circulation desk activities, works with library staff to create a customer service oriented library environment.

•  Participates in special projects and other library related activities as required.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Applicants must have at least (A) two years of full-time or equivalent part-time, paraprofessional or clerical experience as a library assistant, and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitution of an Associates degree or higher degree may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
  • Basic computer literacy.
  • Ability to work well with faculty, students and staff.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelors degree.
  • Experience working in an academic library.
  • In-depth knowledge of WorkFlows, the cataloging utility of SirsiDynix and basic understanding of the public SAILS online catalog.
  • In-depth knowledge of the OCLC database.
  • Working knowledge of integrated library systems.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of library science including cataloging and classification.
  • Familiarity with AACR2, MARC format and the Library of Congress classification system.
  • Previous experience with an on-line circulation system.

Salary Range: $615.79 - $858.35

Position Status: Full time AFSCME unit position with benefits.

Assistant Library Director/Assistant Department Head, Thayer Public Library, Braintree

Description: The Thayer Public Library needs a confident, hands-on, flexible team player with a solid background in public library service to help our busy library grow and respond to the challenge of ever-changing technologies. Our new Assistant Director will be an Assistant Department Head for the Town of Braintree, a community of approximately 34,000, located just south of Boston with excellent public transportation to the city. Our library, which was built in 1999, supports a staff of 33 and continuously increasing circulation and interlibrary loan services.

Duties: Assists the Library Director in administrative, professional, and supervisory duties. Assumes the authority, responsibility, and accountability for all areas of the library when the Director is absent. Acts as liaison to the Old Colony Library Network (OCLN) and technology service and equipment providers/vendors. Serves as team leader for our technology team. Responsible for assigned areas of collection development, staff scheduling, and other duties as assigned by the Director.

Qualifications: MLS degree plus five (5) years of relevant professional experience, preferably in a public library, required, including three (3) years in a library supervisory position. Ability to supervise staff and interact effectively with patrons. Strong communication, team building, and training skills a must. Knowledge of Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office applications, and library circulation/cataloging network applications required; OCLN and SIRSI experience preferred. We are looking for a highly competent librarian with leadership potential. The successful candidate is confident in his/her abilities and demonstrates a can-do, positive attitude.

Salary: Range starts at $53,517; this position is part of Braintree Professional Management Association collective bargaining unit. BPMA contract to be renegotiated for period beginning 7/1/2008.
